WE ARE STARTING BUT THEY ARE LEAVING
If you want to fail, you should start up a company on your own. If you want to win, you will work as a team. However, what happens if that one team member decides to leave? Say, there is a specific reason, be it a personal one, or simply having lost motivation - how do you recover from this?
No matter how you look at it, there is no remedy for it at the moment - you will just have to live with the fact that you are now solo/ missing a founder. You ask yourself now “ Is there something I missed?” or “Could I have prevented that?”, and the answer to this question would be - it really depends on the person.
Especially when you start working together with someone, intentions and motivation are high, and it’s incredibly easy for your cofounder to feel uplifted, focus easily, and fight through a lot of work quickly. The real question is how they fare as time progresses.
Everyone can be a great cheerleader or a motivated worker at the start, but the eventual downturn will determine whether they reach a downfall or get to a point where they can turn things around.
The truth is, we face such situations on a daily basis. It’s just that they don’t break us as often.
Something went wrong. You pitched but got no response. The desired team member you wanted to hire didn’t end up popping in and accepting your offer. Such small negative happenstances here and there come to be, but we brush them off as part of our everyday life. The question is - what breaks us? How much can we take as a person and a character, and keep doing so until we see success?
Most often, people break because there is no progress.
You will see this in teams, not just starting out, but also established ones that know where they are headed. If it’s the same old, same old every day, month, or year, people will start quitting. Why? Because there is no challenge anymore…or because the challenges are too many for one person to handle.
Typically, a person’s patience is a glass half empty, and it keeps filling out with every drop. Whenever something happens, another portion of disdain and dislike drips into it…until it overflows. Every human has such a threshold, and everyone you ask would say a similar thing - “It wasn’t working”, but like with anything - it wasn’t working for them.
It may end up so that your company picks up incredibly much with their departure. Perhaps even their feedback made you realize you weren’t focusing on the right aspects of the job, or that you were all over the place. Sometimes, it’s someone leaving that stirs us up and makes us realize what we are not seeing and should reconsider.
